I have been teaching my son about photography for awhile now and he would like a camera a bit more reliable then my old Minolta Maxxum. (loved that camera but I used it a bit to much) anywho ....
He is only looking to spend about $400 - 500 ... doesn't have to be brandy dandy new if an older model of something would work well. For now, he is looking to possibly get some sports oriented and landscape type of shots. I really only know about the higher end Nikons that are well out of his reach right now. Someone suggested an older Nikon d1x might be good. So just looking for suggestions on the bodies.... open to other brands besides Nikon etc.....but no point and shoots no matter how great they are ![]() Thanks

Nikon d3000 or a used d40x would fit that budget nicely and give him a great starter camera as well.
The d3000 is new around 549.00 and can be found cheaper at times, and comes with a really nice 18-55 VR lens. used d40x can be found for around 350-400 with lens as well. Both would be great cameras I think to start with. Only downside to them are that in order to auto focus on the camera the lens has to be a af-s model lens or a HSM from sigma, that has the focus motor built into the camera.
