Default SLR / DSLR question

Hello! I am new to the DSLR / SLR world. I have been given a Canon EOS Rebel 2000 with a 28-80mm lens. I have also been told I will be receiving the Canon 50mm lens for it. Both of these lens are the same age as the camera.

I would like to change out the body for a DSLR (entry level type) and was wondering if I would need new lens or would the ones I listed above work?

Thank you to anyone who can help!

EOS-mount lenses work on all the dSLR bodies. As long as the lens name starts with "EF-" you're good to go.

The digital "EF-S" lenses, however, will only work on crop-body dSLRS, and won't mount on film or full-frame digital bodies.

Oh, and there are something like half a dozen different 50mm EOS lenses.

EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro
EF 50mm f/1.8 (discontinued)
EF 50mm f/1.8 II
EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
EF 50mm f/1.2L USM
EF 50mm f/1.0L USM (discontinued)

Thank you. The 28-80mm does say EF.

However, I am not sure what a crop style is? Could you please explain?

Some cameras have smaller sensors than others. Most digital SLRs have a smaller sensor than 35mm film. The result is that lenses used on these cameras appear to have a smaller field of view than they would, if used on a "full frame" body (one that has a sensor the size of 35mm film, or which actually does use 35mm film).

This is nothing major, except that EF-S (or for Nikon, DX) lenses (which are made for crop bodies) won't work well on "full frame" cameras. Since most DSLRs are crop bodies, and full frame cameras are very expensive, this isn't likely to be a big problem.

On Nikons they won't work well. On Canons, they won't mount at all--there's an additional "bumper" on the lens mount that stops an EF-S from being mounted on a film or full-frame body. Canon always idiot proofs a lot harder than Nikon does.

And just to be really clear, in the Canon lineup, only the 1Ds and 5D (all Marks) are full-frame bodies. The 1D (all Marks) is a special case, being a 1.3x crop body, but only able to use EF lenses (well, discounting really determined photographers who aren't afraid to take Dremel tools to their lens mounts).

All the other Canon dSLR bodies are 1.6x crop bodies and can use both the EF and EF-S lenses.
