Default All At Sea - dreams do come true!

I posted this pic on the "Share my shots" part of the forum because I didn't expect to get any commenton it; I just like it.

However, I've received many comment and questions about it so if you'd like to know the whole story behind this photo, I'll be happy to share it with you if you want to know.

Post your questions so I give the the info you want rather than babbling on in the wrong direction

Regards,

Jeff

Probably the EXIF would do the trick.

where did you took this picture? Composition wise I really like it. It has information on bunch of bits. The stony beach, the palm leaves, warm colors. Says you've been to a tropical place, perhaps an island judging from the sailboat.

For a shot like this, what are you exposing on to get levels? (Not sure if I asked that correctly, I'm new to photography.) I like these types of shots but never know what to meter off in order to get a proper exposure.

For this shot I took a spot meter reading of the sky above the boat because I wanted the sky properly exposed; my hope was the the boat would fall into a silhouette.

If i'd used the matrix metering mode, I think the shot would have been under exposed as the sun was still a little bright.

However, a huge amount of work went into this shot, it wasn't just a point and click.

The shot was taken in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, next to the Rubicon Marina. My family and I were staying there for a week and when we arrived, there was a stunning sunset with that boat anchored out at sea.

For the next seven days, I left my sunbed by the pool a little earlier, left the hotel complex and wandered down to the marina armed with my camera kit. The sun would set around 7:00 pm and I was ready and setup from 6:00 pm just waiting for the perfect moment.

However, every night was cloudy and we never saw that wonderful sunset again. This was taken on the 7th night and I just about salvaged a slight sun set before it disappeared behind the clouds.

I enjoy photographing sport, but with landscape photography, the perfect light is only available for a split second, you often needs much faster reflexes than sport photography; at least that's predictable.

If you open up Google Earth and locate "playa blanca lanzarote" the location will come up. Here's where I took the shot. The red arrow is showing where I was standing and also direction in which I was pointing my camera.
