Default Portrait of a Loved one

I am a photography student and I have and assignment coming due soon. As I stated above it is called a Portrait of a loved one yeah I know it sounds pretty simply however the loved one can not be in the photography and we can not just stack a bunch of items together and photograph them. I want to use my mother as my subject any suggestions.... Thanks

Hmm, that sounds like a tough one! What are some of her hobbies/passions? Do you have a sibling that people always say, "He/she looks just like your mom!" Take a picture of a picture of your mom. Good luck!

That is an interesting challenge! Think about something that maybe the two of you have in common - a hobby, interests. If that doesn't work, maybe your mother has a bunch of pictures of you when you were little. Set up lighting, ask her to hold some of these pics towards you, and shoot! I think that B&W would look really nice for such shots. Good luck!

Symbols of your loved one? For example, an avid fisherman might be represented by his tackle box and favorite rod. I could be represented by my border collie, flock of sheep and crook....

It just depends on what you are trying to portray about your loved one. Think about the person you want to photograph, and what reminds you of that person...not the features, but the concept...(this is sure a lot easier to visualize in my brain than it is to write down!)

How about starting with a photo of the subject that works well posterized down to black, white and mid grey. You can then assemble a collection of light things and dark things and recreate the photo on a mid-toned patch of carpet. Bonus points if the items relate to the person. That would be one direction to go beyond just a clump of their things because, from a distance, it will look like a picture of them.

How about using her shadow/silhouette projected on a wall, sheet, translucent...or ? doing something that is "her".

Default Sample: Portrait without a Face

I just had a similar challenge and this is what I came up with for my hubby. He's an awesome musician (guitar), rides a motorbike (black leather vest), loves to play Sudoku, has a favorite straw hat etc. Hope it gives you some ideas!
