Default Newbie needs help, how do I do this?...

I want to do a slow shutter of traffic passing on a parkway near my place but in full daylight. All I get is a full white frame from all the light What settings would I need for this? My camera is a Powershot S3IS if that helps you with any limitations it may have.

Thanks in advance

Rick

The lowest ISO setting your camera will support (maybe ISO 50 on that camera) plus the smallest aperture your camera will do (P&S...probably F/8), a tripod or support of some sort, and play around with some slow shutter speeds until you get what you want...maybe start with a 1 second, see if it works, and go from there. You also may want to consider late in the day when the light is less strong. Good luck

I would agree with the previous poster, set your iso to the lowest setting, also stop the lens down so it indicates a extremely underexposed setting, In full sunlight the best setting for exposure time will be around a second. Probably the best time will be early evening prior to sunset. The longer the exposure time you can achieve the better the results.

You're probably also going to need some form of tripod and a neutral density filter in front of the lens if you want a longer exposure. You can just hold up sunglasses in front of the lens, or use a filter holder, like these from Cokin.

I don't think the Powershot will accept filters, which is really what you need to do this shot right...a neutral density filter. This will allow you to slow down the camera during daylight hours.

This is one of those situations where an SLR (or DSLR) is nice. P&S cameras, or intermediates like the Powershot, can take very nice photos and definitely have their place, but most are not capable of the versatility that a SLR is, such as interchangeable lenses, bulb mode, or accepting filters.

Don't get me wrong...there are some nice P&S/intermediates out there. It's just their versatility is limited by their target market design. They are meant to fill the need of those who don't need to have an SLR or don't have/want to spend the money on one...or those who don't need/want to learn how to use one. Therefore, by design, they won't have the capability of their "older brother".

But in the right hands...especially one who knows how to think outside the box...you can learn how to work around their limitations to a point.

Au contraire, like a lot of the earlier Powershot cameras, the S3IS can take an accessory tube that will let you attach 58mm filters (and teleconverter-like accessories) in front of the lens. The G series also does this, and a couple of the older A series models (like the A650IS), too, iirc. If the Powershot has a button on the front to release an accessory ring around the lens (it's kind of like an SLR's lens release button), it can do this.

I'd actually recommend a lensmate tube over the Canon one--lensmate makes its rings out of aluminum rather than plastic, and if you want plastic, there are cheaper versions out there.

Sorry. Spaced and forgot about this in my earlier post.

well let me tell that there will be some computer speak but nothing you cant handle i'm sure. First off yes you need a software to host a server to broadcast music but as of right now i can tell to not waste your time hosting a server yourself, because to host a server yourself you need a really good and powerful computer with A LOT of bandwidth, your average joe computer wont have enough to hold no more than 2-5 people, so unless you spend a fortune buying a new computer and a lot of computer gear and getting a super internet connection dont even try broadcasting on your own, your best bet would be to pay for some website so they can broadcast you over the internet.
