Default Best composition for this shot???

I'm wondering which one of these is the more effective shot in regards to composition only.

I took a shot with more sky in it as I liked the change in the sky colour and wanted the wheel lines in the wheat to draw into the sky. Then later at home I cropped another photo the other way and left just a little sky in it.
I have heard a little about the one third rule so I took it with the sky in mind as a main feature but after cropping changed my mind about the sky.

Now I'm just getting slightly confused. haha

Cheers

Gary

Both are okay I guess. Just a n00b opinion.

And I think if you can enhance the color of the sky in the first photo by changing brightness/contrast.

I find there is much more interest in the second image , its one impressive field and the little touch of sky adds a bit of interest and colour . Hope this helps .

I agree with bradzo66. In the one with less sky, the field makes for a much more clear subject, and we can see details and light in the field, too.

First one has the most appropriate composition-should have used an ND grad filter though, as image is out of camera meter dynamic range. Or, if you don't have grad ND filters, Here's a photoshop way to fix it.

Add adjustment layer> levels
Drag right slider to left
Drag middle slider to left (These moves enable you to get the ground or sea how you want it)
Press “D”
Press “G”
Choose linear gradient -black to transparent
Drag cursor from top of image down to horizon
flatten/save

regards, Ken

Ken - I'm curious: why do you say the 1st one has the more appropriate composition?

2/3 sky-1/3 land = Dreamy feeling; 2/3 land-1/3 sky =Earthy feeling-basic composition compromises. regards, Ken

As far as composition, I definitely like the second one better. Probably could have used a wee bit more sky but still like it much better.
