Default Your photography "style"

(I'm new, and not quite sure where to put this.)

Anyways, what would you consider to be your style? I'm not much of a photographer, just some kid who likes playing with a digital camera and seeing if he can make something easy on the eyes.

I don't like pictures of people when they "smile" (you know, "say cheese!") To me, most of the time it looks unnatural, posed and fake. I hate it. I want a picture of you, not a mask with a smile on it. That's why when I try to take a picture of someone (usually my little sister, she's easy to fit on the frame) I like them to be themselves. Just picture of them playing around, as if the camera doesn't exist.

I think this might be derived from two sources:
  1. The fact I look stupid when I try to smile, and
  2. Linda McCartney. Most of her photos are of her family (or rockstars) just going about their business. There's a picture of Paul and their kids just playing. There's another of McCartney and Lennon looking at something, maybe music lyrics, and their emotion is just captured in black and white. Amazing. Here they are, by the way: http://www.jameshymangallery.com/pag...ngle/3608.html and http://www.jameshymangallery.com/pag...ngle/3609.html

In other word, you prefer doing informal portraits.

"Informal portraits are all about capturing a mood. Successfully done, they portray the subject in a way that reveals something about their personality...".

Well, there are a couple different meanings to this question, but first and foremost I'm a journalist. I prefer color, and I try to have clean, straightforward images. Most of the time I'm shooting candids, once in awhile I'll do some portrait stuff. I do shoot a lot of sports.

to me......."It's get the ball in the frame and in focus!" Even through I'm a photojournalist, I shoot mainly sporting events.

I find that I like to do a lot of different things, but they fall into a few basic categories. How did I discover that? By taking a lot of photos, and paying attention to what I really liked. Some categories that I prefer: industrial ruins (we have a lot of those), strong light making strong lines and shadows, and creative nighttime long exposures.

My best recommendation, ashnape93, is just to take a lot of photos and don't worry about your "style" right off the bat. Just focus on learning and taking photos of things that you like. Then when you feel more comfortable, you can look back and figure out what you like. BUT -- don't let that pigeonhole you! You should always take photos of whatever you like at the moment. Never miss out on a shot because you don't think it's something you're good at!

I find I prefer photographing "objects"...unfortunately, I live in a family that feels if a photo doesn't have a family member in it, it's pointless. What's the point of taking a photo of Niagara falls if the girlfriend and the kids aren't standing in front of it...right ????
In their defense, I find myself often looking at my work and thinking " o.k., this is cool..but what the heck do I do with it now ?"
Like some of you, this is fairly new to me...I've had my digital camera for 5 months and I've already bought a macro lens ( because macro fascinates me ), a wide angle lens ( because I am awed by sunrises ), and a 50mm f1.4 ( because I have a grandchild on the way ), and I'm trying really hard NOT to spend more on an IS tele, but I really enjoy photographing birds....so you can see, I too don't know what "style" of photography I prefer, I just hope I figure it out before I go broke..

regards
mike

I would define my style fairly broadly I guess - I apply a bright, modern style to pretty much any type of photography I do, with the occasional vintage twist and a little bit of an edge of a 'fashion' type feel. More importantly, I don't think it really matters People can feel my style for themselves when they see the pictures.
