if you do not want to use a tripod, you will need to go full manual - its really not that hard - I JUST started doing it about 6 months ago - thanks to Wulf and many others - and shooting in RAW was the next step - this site will make you grow more than you ever thought possible!

If you are shooting in TV mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera will set the aperture. If you shoot in AV mode, you set the aperture and the camera will set the shutter speed. You would still have to set your ISO when using either of those modes. What mode were you shooting?

Have fun this weekend!

This might help a bit in determining which mode you should shoot in, and explain the differences between them:

Program versus Aperture Priority versus Shutter Priority versus Manual Exposure

there are many other great explanations on the web if you google depth of field, shutter speed, aperture, etc...
