Question Photographing children and more

Hi all I'm new to the forum. I will be getting my new dslr on Halloween Just in time to take some spooky pics of my daughter in her costume. I'm getting a Canon 1000D aka Rebel XS. One of my biggest complaints in the past with my P&S was the shutter lag. I have an 8 yr old and she doesn't like to stay in one place for more than 30 sec. I'm really at a loss when it comes to choosing lenses.

What I'm needing from a lens:

Excellent portrait shots -I've looked into the 50mm 1.4

Capable of taking candid photos - As I said I have an 8yr old who doesn't like to stand still.

Landscape shots- I live in Minnesota and I LOVE the landscape here.

Any ideas/suggestions about lenses or where to look would be great!

First get to know the lens that your camera comes with. It'll give you a good idea about what your needs are. But you can get some pretty good deals at B&H photo. I have the fifty and the 17-85 IS. I was going to buy another lens but opted for a flash instead...

Well I'm getting mine from best buy and it comes with the standard kit lens which is Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens with optical image stabilizer. For about another $200 I can also get the 75-300 mm lens with it as well.

I picked up the 50mm f/1.8 -- I don't think that the extra money is worth the f/1.4, you'll still get great depth of field and stellar colors and clarity. But that lens is great for portraits if you're looking for a fixed focal length.
