Default Need an opinion

I'm pretty new to digital photography, so I need to know how much I need to change my thinking....

With my slr film cameras, I would try to frame the shot exactly as I wanted the final pic to be - cropping with the lens, so to speak. I have a friend who, IMHO, is a pretty decent digital photographer. His line of thought is to not fill the frame like I was doing with film, but rather to leave some room for editing in pp.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

BTW - I'm totally enjoying both the new camera AND this site. Most of the photos here are top-notch.

Default A matter of opinion

I believe this is a matter of opinion, I try to fill the frame always but also leaving some space for pp isn't entirely a bad idea I think it depends on what you are photographing. ';0)... Again just my Op.

Similar question was brought up in the discussion somewhere on DPS. You should also see how comfortable you are with PP work. Do you have time for PP?

Not always is it possible to get everything you want in the frame. You have to evaluate the situation and see what fits best.

Great thing about digital is you can do it both ways and see which you like you better. I try to almost fill the frame

I try to come close to filling the frame, but I definitely want to leave enough room for straightening. Sometimes it just isn't possible to get the composition you want in-camera, so getting close and doing the rest in post is a viable option as well. Cropping was pretty commonplace back in the darkroom days too, it's just easier with digital.

i usually try to fill the frame but i'm trying to be better about that and leave some room for pp. reason being, some native sizes are great for 4x6 but if you try to crop it for a 5x7 the elements you want in the pic aren't going to be there or you might cut it off and have to compromise on your composition later.

depends on your available pixels

i'm only on 5.1 MP .. i ALWAYS fill the frame because i dont have the resolution available to crop off.

if you're ar 12MP i can see the benefits of not quite filling the frame as theres plenty pixels to spare.

Definitely personal preference, in my case I prefer to get as close as possible to what I want in camera.

Partly this is due to only having 4MP to play with on my usual camera, so I don't have much scope for cropping.
