Default Will Rule of thirds help

DSC_0314

Can the sun be moved away from the center? Will rule of thirds help in this case?

Tough to say espcially since you are getting that reflection.

I put some girds on your picture - however its still a bit uncertain since the sun is in the middle gird at the top , maybe a more experienced member can advise better.

Following the rule of thirds, you would either want the sun positioned on one of the four inner crossover points or the horizon (probably the top of the sea level) on one of the two horizontal lines. You might even be able to manage both at once - try it!

How you do that depends on the software you have available. With current versions of the GIMP, you can do it all in the crop tool, which lets you overlay various guides, including a thirds grid. You can also specify if you want a particular ratio - this looks like 2:3 but you could try others instead.

Thanks dimitrz for taking a look.
Wulf, I use PS CS3, though there are no readymade guides, still I can experiment. Thanks for the suggestions.

Check out this article on geometrical composition guides, which has downloadable guides as .psd files.

I say, don't worry about the rule of thirds
worry about what looks good
I say, pull a star Wars and put two Suns in

The sun and the reflection are incredibly strong lines in this image, and I think having them centered gives them more power. I like it centered.

Remember, it's fine to break the rule of thirds. it's not meant to be mindlessly adheered to. It's just a guideline.

I thought the same, but, I am always open to suggestions and viewpoints of other photographers, they teach me a lot. Thanks for sparing some time.

Thanks for taking a look, I seem to have a lot of votes for my composition in this shot.
