Default Absolutely beginner needs your help

Hello and namaste to everyone.

I just bought Nikon D-5000 with 18-55mm lense and also I bought a new lense 50mm f1.8 d.

I will be thankfull if someone can suggest me a nice book(no e-book please) or proper tutorial online where I can learn A B C of digital photography or photography.

My question or curosity is also that when "auto" mode of my camera work and take pictures properly(not always) then why we have to learn the remaining techniques of digital photography????

I am curious and like to make photography as my hobby . Thank you in advance for your help.

If you know the basics then you can capture technically good images for those times "auto" doesn't work.

This tutorial (intro to exposure), on this site may help.

+1 to that! RichardTaylor's tutorials are great!

Also, there is a great article in the "tips and techniques" part of this website that has links to tons of great articles: 21 Settings, Techniques and Rules All New Camera Owners Should Know

Don't worry if the info is a bit overwhelming at first - it sure was to me! But with some practice things started to actually make sense to me - so take your time (oh, and have fun!)

"Auto" mode does not know if you want a small aperture to get a lot of depth of field. It does not know when you want to use a large aperture to minimize depth of field. It does not know when you want to keep your ISO setting low to minimize noise. Those are just a few examples. As you learn more, you'll know how to manipulate the exposure triangle mentioned in Richard's tutorials to get the desired effect. Here are a couple of useful articles:

I agree with all the above. "Auto" mode is great for beginners, but in reality it is the camera telling you what it thinks you want. When you learn the basics of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and flash, then you will be able to create those picture you want, not what the camera wants.

Don't forget to actually get out there and press the shutter, practice and learning from real mistakes is also a great educator.
