Default Shooting at the sun

lighthouse sundown | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

This shot is right at the sun but gets a nice composition of the sun and lots of great colour of the main subject. I would have thought the sun would blow out the shot shooting with it in the backround?

... yes, the hdr tag and its presence in the HDR group kind of give it away.

Still I would have thought the shots at the +ev range of the HDR get totally whited out / lens flare and not give any detail on the building?

I think there is still too much dynamic range in this shot to get all the areas exposed correctly, even with the HDR. I believe the human eye can see a range of about 20 stops of light, while your camera can only capture about 9. HDR will increase that to maybe 14 or so, but that still doesn't match what your eye can see.

Well, the flare and reflection of the sun in the water are both blown out, but I dont know where you're getting this mythical 14EV range. It depends on how many EV steps you put into your HDR. If you have a +/- 4EV, then you're gonna get a larger range than if you do +/-2EV
