Default Shooting at a church?

So I landed a gig this weekend shooting for a girl's 'quince' which is a huge celebration when a girls turns 15. The event I will be shooting is at the church and I need some tips on what composition/exposure settings and techniques I should use?
Also will be shooting the family outside and need help on shooting in broad daylight, I usually have horrible shadows over powering people's faces.

I will be using my Nikon D3000 with a Nikkor 1.8 and a 55-200 telephoto lens. I also have the SB-400 flash from Nikon. It's all I have so bare with me.

Thanks!

Here are a couple threads:

shooting inside a church

Shooting a wedding - indoors - no flash

For outdoor, find some open shade.... Do not try to work in direct sunlight, you will loose every time. Expose for the background and use your flash to fill in on the face.

The 55-200 is probably too slow in a badly lit church, and considering that that the D3000 is not very good at higher ISOs, I don't think you can get very decent results. The 1.8 is obviously fine. I'm not sure a flash is allowed to use at a ceremony, but even if it is, it's highly distracting for the guests and I wouldn't use it.
