Default Photographing hockey

So,

We have a local club here in Croatia and it is absolute madness, 6.000 people every game in a stadium that can hold on paper 5.000 people lol. Two years runing it has been an absolute craze.

As hockey is a fast paced game full of adrenaline and action packed I am planning to go with my newly acquired Nikon and capture the action!

Does anyone have any advice on what to look out for, the settings and so on I should use. I am pretty new to photography so any tips and tricks are very welcome!

I am hoping to capture a few hits and maybe an ensuing fight, but goalie saves are awsome too.

I suppose continous shots should be used and then keep the best one and so on.

I will be using a NIkon D80 and the 18-105 VR kit lens. The lighting is pretty good in the stadium and it's not a problem to choose a spot where to shoot as I am quite lucky to have VIP passes! w00t! Sry

Thanks for any advice you might have!

You will need to set a fairly fast shutter speed to freeze the action. Or you can keep it fairly slow (say, 1/60) and get some 'panning' shots as the players zoom past you. Lots of opportunities for different style shots. Try to zoom in tight on the action, too much space around the subjects makes the shot lack impact.
