Natural light is always the way to go. And it's very rare for a food shot taken from directly above to look good. Your shot looks good composition-wise, lighting is just perhaps a bit off.
There are some tips right here on DPS, and try checking out food blogs; the lady who runs SmittenKitchen takes great photos of her food.

I too am a newbie when it comes to food photography but have found that food photography demands creative play of angles & depth of field. if you look around on Flickr, food photography is often done using a wider aperture, so getting a 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 will be good. Also try to include supplementary items/props like ketchup bottle, glass, cutlery, napkin etc in your food shots to add the spice to your photographs.
In your picture, I find the picture getting disturbed by food placed in the backdrop. Apart from that its not bad at all. Work on & you would advance.
