Default Just Getting Serious

I am just now learning about the 1/3 rule. Before I have always just gone with what my eye has told me. I want to know where this photo would fall in, does it meet the 1/3 rule or is it out there on its own.

Hello TellingStories.

This may seem like an uncivil welcome to the DPS forum, but the community here is making a concerted effort to enforce some rules in the Critique part of the forum, all for the greater good.

If you have a look at the rules sticky (here), you'll see that you are offside by posting
two photos, and maybe by posting attachments instead of using a hosting site. People will also ask you to post EXIF data (settings mostly) with your photo.

If you don't want to jump through these hoops, you can post in other parts of the forum which don't have these same rules (Photographing People might work, for example).

Happy to have a look at your post once it complies.

Cheers,

EL

Yes please read the posting rules.

But as it is your first post, I'll give you some feedback.

I think it is pretty easy to tell if something obeys the rule of thirds. Just see if it lines up with thirds! Your postcard version appears to work. The two pairs of legs more or less line up with the vertical thirds and end on the lower horizontal third. So in that sense, yes it does follow the rule of thirds.

It also seems to be a bit out of focus, or maybe you used digital zoom or cropped this way down. The caption "Atlantic Ocean" makes me think, "Uh so where's the ocean?" Perhaps the name of the beach would be more appropriate.

Keep posting and reading. You'll learn a lot here.

There appears to be another MikeM. I'm not him, I'm me.

Default Will Try Again

I have read over the postings. I will give it a try again. I noticed the rule about one photo just minutes after I had posted and could not figure out how to go back and take one off. I will sit down and read through how to post to flickr. Thank you for your patience.

TellingStories, Welcome

Your first thread is very much about Composition, so I moved it for you. If you want to choose one of your recomposed photos, add information as described in the guidelines, and repost to Critique, we'll be glad to see it. Enjoy your stay.
