EV Compensation Explained

By the way, a further note on use of EV compensation: some cameras allow you to change the step values (for instance my Pentax K20D lets me choose between 0.3 EV or 0.5 EV steps).

what metering mode do you choose? from my experience when i used the wrong metering mode, i got those unpredictable results. when i expected the whole frame to be decently lit, yet i used spot metering for example. sometimes the main subject was underexposed due to brighter background.

one thing you should do in order to understand maybe just keep shooting, and learn from the mistakes, i believe you will get better and better

i hope this could help:

P - program mode, the camera chooses the appropriate shutter speed and aperture value in order to get the correct exposure

Av - Aperture Value, the camera chooses the shutter speed, we decide the aperture value, this is useful when we want to control the depth of field,

Tv - Time Value/Shutter priority, The camera chooses the aperture value, we choose the shutter speed.
