SO - With the ever increasing "megapixel race" and the net effect being that we're always in need of some good solid secure storage... dPS and ioSafe have come up with a fun little competition for you...
The Prize: I have an ioSafe Solo 500gb external drive sitting here on my desk. ![]() Some info on the little (not!) sucker for you... "The rugged desktop ioSafe Solo hard drive brings disaster protection to a price range that everyone can afford. With capacities from 500GB to 1.5TB, the ioSafe Solo can safely protect precious digital family photo albums, MP3 music libraries and days of video memories. For business, the ioSafe Solo hard drive is a great way to protect customer databases or to secure regulated information including patient records (HIPAA, Sox, etc) or credit card information (PCI regulated). Businesses use the Solo hard drive as a backup and storage device, no longer worrying about data loss from moving computer tapes and files offsite. Like other ioSafe disk drives or storage systems, the Solo hard drive is for Mac or PC and uses patented technology including FloSafe air flow cooling, HydroSafe waterproof barriers and the DataCast fire safe insulation" How to win it? This is the fun part - You have to head over to the ioSafe website and find out the answer to the poll above (I can see the results, you can't!) and then you need to write a comment below as an answer to the following question... "If you had to test the abilities of the ioSafe - either its "Fireproof" or "Waterproof" factors - How would you do it? e.g. I'd swing it off the side of a pirate ship... on fire! I want weird and wacky ideas! - Keep them short, make them amusing, make them serious... Just make them! Oh and there's (no) extra points for posting a photo or video! but it could be fun if you did! ***YOU MUST HAVE A POLL VOTE AND A COMMENT TO ENTER*** The competition is open to moderators as well - just to up the stakes! No bribes can be accepted (unless it's the new Canon 70-200 f2.8 Mk2!) My decision is final, there's no cash alternative, competition closes 8th October 2009 at 9AM UK TIME.

Well I was fully disappointed when I looked up the figures and realised I couldn't say that I'd try burning it using an Oxy-fuel torch in the middle of Wellington Harbour (from what I can tell it would burn too hot even for such a fancy drive)... so instead I'd have to say... I'd have to attach to to cow and fire it off a catapult (with the disk on fire of course... for good measure
) (*hopes people realise it's a Monty Python thing not me hating cows* lol)

To properly cook your ioSafe Solo, place in slightly salted water and broil gently for 3 days to tenderise. Then remove from the water, add a twist of pepper and flame grill at gas mark 51 (approx) for precisely 30 minutes. Allow to cool and serve with a garnish of fresh USB 2.0 cables for tender and succulent data.

How would I test whether it was fireproof or not? Why, I'd sacrifice it on an altar. I just got a huge box of matches in to light the chapel tapers, and I'm sure I can work something out. It's all about trial and error.
And as for the waterproof thing? Flush it down the loo.

To test the absolute fireproof capability of the ioSafe Solo, bring it to a town hall meeting on health care reform. Center it squarely on the podium between the speaker and the furious crowd

Douse it in Greek fire set it alight then use a trebuchet to fling it into the sea. The trebuchet is optional but adds to the enjoyment. factor.
The only problem is that once you've flung it into the sea you'll have a hard time finding it as trebuches can fling things quite far and the sea is vast. |
