Default color change

I just started to take photos again recently and started to edit some photos.
I took a random photo of my friend while he was preping for a meeting. The compsoition is horrible but then I started to fidle around with the colors on GIMP. I was just wondering if I went overboard.

Camera: Canon Digital Rebel Xs 10 MP
It was on full auto with no flash, The first is the orginal, while the second is a edit

Hi Going easy,

This is an interesting image that I think has real potential.

It's really not that bad. You could fix it up quite a bit by just blurring the background in gimp.

I don't think so. In fact I think that you could go even further. Why not push the saturation to the limit and really make it abstract. If it were my image, I would push the colors and contrast until the image posterizes. I think that would look cool.

If I were taking that shot, I'd be tempted to move right to avoid that one stand that shoots through the main subject's body. But in terms of the edit, I like what you've done. I think it adds a lot of visual interest to the shot.
