Default please be gentle, this is my first time.

this was taken in late morning, full sunshine, with my Canon 350D and nifty-fifty (1.8). does anyone like either of these and if so, please tell me why. I'm still pretty new at this and I just want to see if what appeals to me, has any merit.

Hi SaBal5398,

I think that both of these images are nice and they definitely have merit. I personally prefer the first image with the tighter crop, because I think the most interesting part of the this statue is the face of the mother.

If had taken this shot, I would have moved to the right a bit and shown more of the mother's neck, but that's just my personal taste.

Hi.

I like both shot, but I guess I prefer the tighter crop because the other one looks a little unsharp.

If you add the EXIF I'm sure it will help us helping you.

I guess you were shooting at f/1.8, or closer to, where you should probably have set the aperture to f/2.8 or something to have a little more details on the statue.

Thank you all for your kind responses.

I was trying to apply the R.O.T., with the eyes of the mother as the focal point.

EXIF = 1/4000, f/2.2, 50mm, ISO 100

Perhaps the biggest reason I'm leaning toward the tighter crop is because in the alternate photo there's a red bug on her neck that gives me the creeps (thus spoiling the mood of the image). Also there seems to be something on the child's leg.

Unfortunately I like the looser crop at the same time because I like the peripheral focus (or perhaps unintended focus, which is just fine ) of the child's head in the mother's lap, which adds to the caring and tenderness I feel exuding from the statue.

If you could retake the photo or if you're up for some post processing, I would go with the second one.
