Default composition comparison

Hi

I'm still very new to photography. I've read the composition rules, but I'm finding it a bit hard to apply to my own photo's, so please have a look at the photos below (original and cropped) both just desaturated and brightness/contrast slightly adjusted. Please tell me which composition works better and why

archesFinalDLRB&W800

archesFinalDLRB&Wcropped800

What caught my eye about this was the repeated symetry of the arches and I think the second one shows it better, but then my subject is in the centre of the photo (breaking rule of thirds) and since its not entirely symetrical I'm not sure if this works.

Feel free to change and repost if you think you can improve them

Thanks!

I think a better option would have been to get in close with your widest lens to eliminate the distracting foreground bush, and to get both arches fully into the image instead of cutting through one of them

I agree about the bush being distracting, but I would also try a wider lens or move back so that both arches are in the frame. I think in this case (with only two arches), your only coice is to have the column in the middles of the photo. Rules are meant to be broken at times! Good luck.
