I see what you mean. I think that the composition of the first shot seems a little crowded. The girl is right on the edge of the shot, the Sand castle is really close to the bottom of the shot as well. I think the sand in the second one looks a little better, partly because of exposure, but also because you can see a little of the sand below the castle. Did you crop the first one at all? If so, I would go back and loosen it up just a bit, then the first one would take the cake. As it stands, I think I like the second better.
I also like the crashing wave in the second shot. |

The first one had just a couple elements that are slightly distracting causing me to cast my vote for your second photo: part of the girl's right arm is missing out of the shot, whatever is in the water in the upper left and is something coming out of her head...that little white spot?

Thanks for your comments i_am_beam and skoggiel. The first photo was not cropped at all but I did straighten the horizon and that's how I lost the girls right hand.
I think you're both right, the composition is busy in the first photo, both the sandcastle and the girl fight for a place in the frame. I didn't even notice the white spot on her head until you mentioned it, it must have been something in the water. I will fix it.Many thanks again! |
