Arrow Elegant Chair

Okay i just took this picture but i was a little concerned on 1, wheather the light coming in from the window ruins the picture, 2, does the picture look better in color or B&W, and 3, was the rule of thirds followed correctly.

tru3blood, Welcome

Long before the rule of thirds comes into question, the tilt downward on the right is all I see.

After that I see the chairs cut off at the legs. Then the blown-out (over-exposed) glass on the wall art, and the window.

The chair by itself may have been a good subject. Its natural L-shape in a 3/4 pose would have fit into a thirds composition. This has the look of a shot taken at random. I'd be interested in your thoughts about what the rule of thirds suggests to you, and how this seemed to fit that idea.

Sometimes a tall subject looks better in a Portrait (vertical) orientation. If you were to move the chair into a simpler area, even outdoors if that's the simplest backdrop available, shoot in a vertical camera position, and arrange the back and the seat near the thirds intersections, it could be an elegant image. Maybe borrow a Persian cat to lounge on the cushion.

Depending on what explanation you read about the thirds composition idea, it may not make sense until you see thousands of photos, both using it, and not using it. Faces, for instance, may call for the eyes to be on a thirds line vertically, or one eye to be placed on a thirds intersect (where two lines cross). Your chair's vertical back and horizontal seat need the legs to show, to give it height and better proportional composition presence. What's a chair without legs? Then it may be the center of the back, and the point where the legs join the seat, that fall on the thirds lines.

I don't vote "suck" for any image, so if that were to read "both need work," it would be more accurate. You didn't carve them in stone, so there's still a chance to do better in another shot.

Hm. First thing I'm noticeing is strange angle. Second is overblown mirror and window. After telling that, I would select second (black and white) if I must select one.

Now after reading a little bit of jiminyClickit's post, I see he already said all that and much more, so I will finish here
