I like the shot better in BW I think it makes the things in the background less distracting

Black and white gets my vote too although I must admit to liking the rusty colour and textures in the colour shot.

Of the two, I like the B&W better, but... you could go the opposite direction and crank up the saturation or apply a creative action to the color one to emphasize the rust.

If you want to shoot with the intention of turning to B&W you want to find objects that have 1) detail, 2) Contrast, and 3) No shadow unless the shadow is going to be part of the detail. The best day to shoot a shot like you have is on an overcast day.

I have straightened your shot a bit, then in Camera Raw I removed teh color and applied a Fuji Provia -x-pro preset emulsion. This is an emulation of a cross processed development in c-41 chemistry (not that this would mean much these days, from film days)....... The preset is applied after the black and white conversion by saving teh image out as a tiff then reloading it into Camera Raw and applying the preset. Cross-processing is used to create unnatural unexpected results, according to LifeInDigitalFilm who I get my presets from.

The result was unexpected...
