perhaps because we "read" from left to right the first one appeals to me more? my eye goes to the left side first out of instict maybe and it seems more natural....hmmm interesting....

I had read in one of my grandfather's old print photography books that pictures set up from left to right usually "read" better; it was why I flipped the image. For me, I look at the first one and feel lop-sided, I guess. But the second feels more natural. I think my eye is going from the slightly out of focus leaf, up the branch and then around to the log, where there's more light and its sharp. But yet again, that was how I took it in the first place. I remember placing all those elements so I thought that maybe I had a biased opinion? I don't know. Thanks so much corry!

In a picture that reads left to right, that means it "builds" with the primary subject to the right....Images that do not read left to right are usually only (more) effective if the right side is basically "negative space".
I prefer the second image.
