My thoughts when I looked at the first shot were " Wow, she's really centered in that frame, but it seems to work because she has a very centred pose - the direct look, the hair, the hands. It works for me"
Then I looked at the second shot and thought " Yup, the first one looks better. Second one maybe if the pose was different, but for this subject as she sits, the first shot." Hope that helps ya!

to me:
The top one to me represents solitude, someone who chooses to be alone, and not be surrounded by anything, or anyone The second one represents loneliness, something missing in her life, something that should be there next to her, but is not Just my feelings when I looked at these, and maybe her expression draws me to these feelings. I suppose it would be totally different if she were smiling.

Second one for me. When I saw the first, my eyes immediately went to the negative space around her, then settled on her. In the second one, my eyes immediately went to her, and the negative space simply added to the image....I can't put my finger on why, but that's what my immediate thoughts were.
ETA: Looking again, the first looks like a DMV shot: "Stand there, smile." Click. The second seems more deliberate. |

I thought "what a lonely person" when I looked at the first image. Looking at the second it seems like someone has just exited the shot.

HAHAHA DMV I'm so hurt!
But that's definitely I thought could be thought of with this image Susan! And thanks for your thoughts on the feelings part.. I wanted to see what people read into that in the context you were saying. Tomorrow, armed with whatever comments come next and a fresh set of eyes, I'll decide on a final.. not going to be easy because both the moods/feelings you mentioned Susan are good for what i'm going for! heh

I prefer the offset one. With the centered one, I'm seeing differences between her left and right sides that I gloss over when she's offset in the frame. I also notice a bit of color difference in the centered one, like the background lighting didn't cover the whole wall.
If I had to assign an emotion to each image, I'd say the centered one feels isolated, while the offset one feels like there's potential there, like she's waiting for something to fill the other side of the frame. |
