Default Warm or Cool....

Hi! I'm newer to the forum and was just hoping for some help between these photos. I took these at our local show choir's annual pop show (I'm an alumni and in the past 6-7 months since I've bought my camera, I've become somewhat of their 'photographer', even though I am SUCH an amateur. It's been nice to have their support while I was experimenting with my camera.) which features individual acts and their competition set. (I would go more in depth, but show choir is... comparable to glee.) I took these two photos of my pal Chris, a sophomore at the time, performing an original song he wrote!

My question is, do you prefer the cooler or warmer version?

Oh. I shoot with a Canon Rebel XS and my kit lens. Which is lame, but I love Carlos (my camera) and I am working to get a better lens. So yea, feed back is appreciated.

Also, check out my set from the 2011 show choir season, if you wish (:

As far as temperature goes, I like the warmer version.

For future reference, I'd suggest you take a step or two to the side in order to keep the mic stand directly out of your subject's face. You also might want to try adding some vertical shots that fill the frame more.

I like this one of Whitney: whitney. | Flickr - Photo Sharing! although I'd suggest you try to keep an eye on the background. It looks like she's crapping a mic stand.

Overall, it's a nice set that takes the viewer through the evening of performances. I think you could have a future shooting concerts if such a thing appeals to you.

What he said. I'll just add the reason why I prefer the warmer one ... skin tones. For general purposes, you want to go for proper skin tones first and people tend to look a little better in warmer colors than in cold bluish colors. There are of course exceptions to this depending on the effect you want.

And I think you are doing quite well with the kit you have. However, If you really like this concert/people kinda photography and you have a little money to burn, you might take a look at the Canon 50mm 1.8 (about $110) or the 85mm 1.8 (just under $400). These would both give you some nice low light performance and are very popular lenses for the price. If money is tight, stick with the kit, it's working pretty well for you.
