Stick with the color and do a levels adjustment on it. I know most people don't like selective coloring but bw with just the paper/brush in color looks nice also.

I actually started moving in that direction but couldn't decide how much to desaturate. I think lessened the color in the brick wall but not walkway and this shirt. I'll keep playing with it and post it again.

I like the purple one... not sure why. His arm is a bit overexposed in that one, but I think you could fix that pretty easily. NOT a fan of selective color myself. I think the composition is fine without having to make a color section scream "hey! over here! look at me!" All the angles - brush and arms, lead you right to the painting.
