Just wondering, why didn't you go for the natural colours to show off the watercolour paints/artwork he was doing? Just trying to understand the effect you were going for.....

I think the monotoned theme (purple or sepia or any one-colour you may use) doesn't do much for the photo. I think it would have shined if you had concentrated on focusing the vibrancy and enhancement of the colours on his artwork. I know you were, at least, trying to go for that because you did crop it to that effect.

Also, his arm looks overexposed? You may want to provide exif data so others can see settings and help with this.....

Can you show us the original colours? Perhaps people can give a more technical and also aesthetic advice if you provide it

Stick with the color and do a levels adjustment on it. I know most people don't like selective coloring but bw with just the paper/brush in color looks nice also.

I actually started moving in that direction but couldn't decide how much to desaturate. I think lessened the color in the brick wall but not walkway and this shirt. I'll keep playing with it and post it again.

I like the purple one... not sure why. His arm is a bit overexposed in that one, but I think you could fix that pretty easily. NOT a fan of selective color myself. I think the composition is fine without having to make a color section scream "hey! over here! look at me!" All the angles - brush and arms, lead you right to the painting.
