which is better?

Which is better? the sepia toned or the Black&white one?
or both of them just outright horrible? please tell me

I wouldn't say horrible, just a bit too dark. I think I know what you were aiming at getting the light to just strike certain parts, but in this case I really think a soft flash-fill would have made a huge difference, or alternatively having a slightly stronger source of light coming from only one side, but I'm guessing you didn't have control over the light in this case? I'm not a lighting expert though, maybe someone else can help you.

As for your original question - the black and white looks a little blue and white to me, but I'd probably go with that one.

This could be a case of monitor adjustment. It looks dark to me too. I like the second one better, but on my monitor both are too dark. I suggest checking out the website above.
