Default Wolf spider

G'day, took this a few days ago, just wondering about the focus, It is not perfect but is it macro, is there a rule that decides what is macro and what is not?
closer wolf spider

This was taken from a bit farther away and cropped to be closer does this also count as macro even though it was taken a fair way away?

Thank you fro any opinions.

Nice big spider you have here Peter. To answer your question, these are close ups, the way I have always been taught is macro reveals details too small for the human eye to perceive. But as in all things, the limits are fluid.

And the point of focus should be on the eyes if the subject has them.

I think this photo could have turned out a lot better if you used a diffused light source.

Since you asked...True macro means the image on your camera's sensor is as big or bigger than the actual object you are shooting. Very close indeed. But that doesn't mean there are plenty of amazing shots to be made that don't qualify by the technical definition. Spiders can present a special kind of problem when shooting macro that is best solved with a technique called "stacked focusing." There is free software on the Net to help you with that.
