Default tone or not to tone

Just out of curiosity.. which would you prefer and reasons if you may.

I'm drawn to the second version because it has more depth and clarity to my eye. The first is too washed out, making everything gray and flat.

the higher contrast looks better ...but i think there is a happy medium between the two...in the high contrast one you have masked some of the detail in the shadow areas

thanks. somehow i got a feeling that i kind of overdid the first one making it look too washed out.

Not sure what you mean by that, but i'm guessing that what you imply is that the details in some of the dark areas are totally black.? which is not good.?

I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

For me, I like the first one, because it reminds me of the old newspaper days...I like the washed out look for this one, for some reason because it brings some nostalgic feeling to it..

But of course, if that is not what you are going for....

What a surprise, the guy with the washed out avatar likes the washed out look.

Personally, I like the higher contrast one. There's not that look of haze. The tones are more rich. The kid just pops against the floor and the background more.

well, we do try to vary our picture styles, sharp contrast bnw color etc, in this attempt to go for a washed out look, most probably i over did it somehow.. thanks friend fot the input.. glad you liked it.

thanks for that input, i guess the subject/ picture scene wasn't suitable for that kind of processing huh,.?
