Default Tubing on Winnipesaukee

Conditions were complete overcast on the lake. The photo was taken at about 2pm. Anyways, here are the settings and what I've done to the photo in post-processing:

Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 1/1000
Aperture: f/5.0
Focal Length: 50 mm (Tamron 17-50 f/2.8)
ISO Speed: 400
Shot: JPEG

Used Adobe Lightroom 3, added +.40 to the exposure, +3 contrast, +20 to clarity, and gave it sharpening via the scenic preset. Didn't do anything to the WB.

Processed

First off, what do you think?

On my end I'm a little upset with the clarity of his face and body along with the reds on the tube. A lot of the other photos are quite noisy in these areas. It just isn't as sharp as I would like it.

The exposure is good, but why not crop the other way, sticking the tube just off centre right. The space on the right of this image makes it look like you missed the shot.
Add a touch of "fill-light" on the man.

I think that in the first image, the rope makes a nice line that leads the viewer's eye to the subject. I think you should keep it in the image. I agree that if you feel you have to crop anything, I would crop from the right, not the left. Normally, I don't like the subject right in the middle of the frame, but I think it works here because the rope follows the rule of thirds. I see you shot at 1/1000, so any lack of focus should not be due to the motion of the subject.
