Default New camera

hi
I am new to this forum. Till now I was using Canon point and shoot camera. I am planning to upgrade to DSLR. I am confused in choosing camera. I have finalized Canon EOS 1000D along with Canon 50mm f 1.8 lens. When I was browsing through Amazon, I came across one more combination, where in Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi was along with Canon 50mm f 1.8 lens in the similar price range for the above mentioned combination (Canon EOS 1000D along with Canon 50mm f 1.8 lens). Please tell me can I manage Rebel Xsi without kit lens but only with Canon 50mm f 1.8 lens. I am interested in portrait and landscape. So which combination I should chose?

A. Canon EOS 1000D + 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens+Canon 50mm f 1.8 lens
OR
B. Canon EOS Rebel XSi Digital SLR Camera with EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens + 8GB Card + Battery + Case + Accessory Kit NO KIT LENS
Regards
shashi

Hi shashi,

I just got a 500D (X1i) with kit lens, then bought the 50mm prime shortly afterwards. I agonized for days which camera to buy! The 50mm is ideal for portrait, which you want. If you have plenty of room to manouver, then the 50mm is also good for landscape; it is much faster, sharper and with better colour than the kit lens. However, the 50 mm lens is like being stuck in zoom mode, and you might miss being able to take wide-angled shots. You will also have to move around more to get your shots.

Also the zoom lens is more flexible than the prime when stuck on a tripod (which I started playing with for the first time today ).

Hope this helps,

r0b

You may be able to manage with just the 50 F1.8 however your landscape oportunities will be restricted.

I would go with the choice "A"

+1 on Richard's comments.

You might be able to get away with landscapes if you wanted to do panorama stitching, but having the kit lens for the wide angle and zoom is undoubtedly useful, particularly in vacation snapshot situations.

I personally own a XS or 1000d canon with the 18 55 kit lens and do most of my shots with this lens and i love it. All you have to know is the limits of what your camera and lens combination will or will not do. By experience the 50mm prime is a really difficult lens to work with and the kit lens offers a lot of flexibility. You could probably find a 55mm 1.8 on ebay almost new for approx 50$ usd. That is what i did. Both are great choices and offer almost the same specks technically asside form a few more MP. and a larger LCD that i don't use fom much more than setting up my camera and viewing historigram anyways.
see my Flickr if you want some examples of what the XS and 18 55 kit lens can do.

i've had my 1000D for about 3 months now, it was my first DSLR and i couldn't be happier with it. I am looking to purchase an additional zoom lens but the kit lens that came with it (18-55mm) has produced some stunning images - Flickr: Fields of View's Photostream

Default hi

@sumeet,
I bought it from US that cost me, around 26k ( In India, you will get kt lens without image stabilization -- beware of it) in India the lowest price in Mumbai was 26K (1000D + kit lens no IS)
if you need more information post me
