Default Canon users, if you could pick just 1 lens.....

What lens would you consider multi-purpose, to walk around & take great pics of just about anything?

24-70 f/2.8 L for both cropped and full frame DSLR. I used the same lens 28-70 f/2.8 L for my D30, 5D and 5D Mk II.

It depends on where I am walking, however my general purpose walk around/vacation lens is a Canon 24-105 F4 L IS on a Canon 5D

When my main camera was a 40D it was the Canon 17-85 F4.5-F5.6 IS

I agree with the 24-105 F4 L for a walk around lens. If I know I'll be needing zoom (hunting wildlife with camera), I'll lug the 70-200 2.8 L, but for most use, the 24-105 is great.

A 50mm on full frame used to be my walk about lens. These days I just use a compact for the everything and anything and use the DSLR with a lens that suits the task in hand (usually macro in my case).

Canon: 18-55mm IS
Nikon: 55-200mm VR

I love the performances of these two lenses. The Canon is a gem. Just because it is cheap doesn't mean it won't be good. It is a great performer. It can also do a fair bit of macro. The Nikon tele is small and light enough to carry around in a bag. I also have a Canon 55-200 and it feels like a grenade launcher.
If I carry any Canons or Nikons just for walk arounds, these 2 lenses are the ones attached.
Cheers

I love my 18-55 IS. I have taken my whole bag with when I've gone out walking around and I still have that one on 95% of the time.

No lens can do everything. I like primes and the 35 1.4L is an AWESOME lens on a crop camera.

That depends, what price bracket are we talking?
Low end: 50mm f/1.8 hands down.
Lower middle: 28-135mm IS
Upper middle and upper end, well, see what people posted above. I can't afford those just yet.
