Agreed. The closest to an all-purpose prime would be a 35 f/1.4: landscapes, portraits, street shooting, available light, close-ups--it can handle a lot...far more versatile in some ways than the EF 24-105 f/L IS USM, and certainly better image quality. I'd love to own a 35/1.4, but I'm content for now with my adapted Leica Summicron-R 35/2.

I have been really enjoying the 24-105 f/4 L IS. It is a good zoom range on a crop body camera and if the subject isn't moving fast it takes amazingly good pictures in very low light. It is now on my camera 90% of the time. But if I had to choose JUST one lens I would probably want Canon's 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS.

Another great crop alternative for a lower price is the Tamron 2.8 17-50mm. It's quiet, has terrific AF and sturdy.

Canon 24-105 L. Best all-rounder for me. Favourite Lens is 100-400 L bit big though.

I'll give a +1 for the 35mm 1.4. Great lens, super sharp, and it sees in the dark (more or less).
