Default Canon 50D vs Canon 7D

I have been looking a lot into what camera I'd like to get and I've narrowed it down (from my price range, anyways) into either the Canon 50D or Canon 7D. My main focus is action shots of mainly dogs.

What do you prefer? What do you have to say for each, pros and cons?

Thanks!

Heather

I haven't used the 50D but I think it's fairly similar to the 40D I had but with more pixels. The 7D is miles better than the 40D.

I don't think it matters what you shoot - the 7D will be better than the 50D. For action shots with available light the 7D should be a lot better than the 50D.

....you might get the impression I rate the 7D very highly

Some of my full-res shots that have come straight from DPP (no photoshop) are here. Mostly low ISO stuff but the shot with the bird was ISO 800 and the shot with the little girl was ISO 6400.

I shoot with a 40D and just looking at the specs, especially focussing speed & accuracy it is the one to get. However you will probaly need very good glass to get the most out of it.

I don't have the 40D nor the 50D, so I can only comment on my experience with my 7D. The 7D has a tremendous AF system, and its metering sensor has been overhauled too. The overall feel of the camera is terriffic. The sensor noise at high ISOs isn't bad, and Noise Ninja turns that into a pleasant grain. The viewfinder is maybe its biggest asset, as it's large, covers 100% of the image, and includes an overlaid LCD display that shows info like AF points and a 2-axis "spirit level" without getting in your way.

If you can. get the 7D.

i've used both the 50D and the 7D... the 50D is a great camera and has a pretty fast 6.3 fps burst rate. The 7D, however, is even faster (at 8 fps) and overall a step above the 50D in most regards. It is definitely a better camera than the 50D. That said, unless you are planning on taking video, or turning your photography into a business, the 50D would easily meet all your needs and will produce stellar photos. Also, if you invest in the 50D that would give you more money to spend on glass, because that will have a bigger impact overall on your image quality.

I shoot with the 7D to do sports photos of my kids team sports and would highly recommend it, as you will find in just about every review done of the 7D! However, it won't matter a bit unless you accompany it with a fast lens, so the real kicker will be making sure you have the glass to go with it. I shoot with a 2.8 IS 70-200... and it's a handful, but well worth it to get that action where you want it.

Hi

I'm still a newbie to the site and relatively to digital photography. I've been using a Panasonic FZ30 for the last 18 months which I bought secondhand and have been pleased witht he results for a 'point and shot'. I too think it is time to upgrade and have been looking at the 50D and 7D.

I like the look of the 7D but I too thought is it better to go with the 50D and spend the extra on 'glass'. Are the differences in lenses that significant? To a novice (me !!) it seems that the main difference between the various versions of say Canon's 70 - 200 lens is the aperture. However, if these new camera bodies can truly use very high ISO speeds doesn;t that compensate?

May be I am oversimplifying things here but would appreciate peoples views on the the dilemma. Is it 7D with kit lense or 50D with better lens?

Cheers

Pete

I'd go with the 7D. it'll cost a bit more in the beginning but itll give you better images in the long run

Thanks for the view Osmosis. When you say "in the long run" is that because you are working on the principle that I'd upgrade the glass on the 7D as well in time .... or do you see the 7D as having more scope to produce better pictures as I gain more experience?

Thanks in advance for your help

Pete

I use and own the 40D, 7D and 1DMkIII. The 7D was bought about 2 months ago and I haven't used the 40D or the 1D MkIII since buying the 7D. For wildlife and high speed action the 1D is better than the 7D but the 7D does everything well. If I had to choose one camera from the three it would be the 7D
