I have all but decided on the XS with kit lense as my first DSLR with a "50 - 1.8" as an extra lense for low light and indoors. I primarily shoot landscape and TONS of family pics (grandchildren).
Will this work? Will the absence of spot metering be an issue? Thanks in advance for the help! |

Worked fine for me when I had my XT (which also lacked spot metering, was 8MP, and had only the seven-point AF--the XS is basically just an updated XT without the IR sensor for the remote).
Also, you do not have to have an ultrawide lens to do landscapes, despite what people will tell you. With panorama stitching the 50mm can work just fine. ![]() ![]() larger version. Canon XT. EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro. iso 100, f/4, 1/3200s. Handheld. 27 images, 9x3 grid, stitched together with Calico (OSX port of Autostitch).

I have the XS and XSi and the poor XS hardly ever gets used due to the more focus points on the XSi

Yes. The 18-55 is a terrific landscape lens for a crop body. Once you stop that lens down to f/8, it becomes nice and sharp.
