Default Flash For Canon

I have been looking into buying a new flash and found a few that would fit my needs. Some are however third party brands which have mixed reviews. So I am wondering what brand flash do you use? Are you happy with it?

I use the Canon 580EX and also have a Metz 58. I prefer the 580EX but it could be because I've used it more and am more familiar with it. I mainly use the Metz as a slave. If you go with Canon, I recommend the 580EX II. It swivels 360 degrees which makes bouncing the flash a breeze.

Use the 580EXII and couldn't be happier with it... unless I had two of them. Used the 580EX as well, had great experiences with it, but ended up getting the II - just got a good deal on it.

Haven't tried 3rd party flashes, but saw many of the comments/reviews you are probably reading now... stayed away due to them - difference in price wasn't worth the potential hassle when I knew what I was going to get with the Canon flash.

If youre using it on-camera, get either the 430EX or 580EX models. If youre using it off-camera, then your options broaden significantly.

I have an canon eos xsi. my issue is as follows:

the internal flash will not pop up when the flash button is pushed. In the flash menu for the internal flash, it tells me this menu is not available because an external flash unti is attached, however the external unit is not attached.

Is there something jammed into the hotshoe, or touching the camera hotshoe contacts? If the hotshoe is clear and clean, and resetting the camera settings doesn't clear it, it may be time to call up Canon service.

I'm happy using the 430 EX II and the SB 600. It's got all the power I need.

The 430EX II is a nice speedlite. But if you want any kind of control in the future, then you want nothing less than the 580EX II. I know it is a lot of money, but my motto is buy once cry once. You will never regret it.

On camera flash, make sure it is a canon. The other hassles that come with 3rd party (syncing issues etc) are not worth it. Rusty echoes my feeling on these things. Take the pain once
