Default Portrait Lens

What lens can you recommend me to use for taking portraits mostly indoors? I usually take full body shots, will the 50mm f/1.8 canon lens be up for it? or should i look for something else?
My camera is the Rebel t1/500d

The 50 1.8 would be great for indoor portraits. Anything wider and you'd get an unflattering distortion.

For full body shots, ~35mm for your camera or 50mm for full frame.

That only works for working distance. 35mm still gives a bit of distortion at the edges.

I too am also looking to get into portraits. It is my understanding that the "nifty-fifty", while not perfect, would be a great place to start, and offers a great value for performance vs. cost. Is this a fair statement?
Oh, I am using a Canon T1i if that makes a difference.

That's a fair statement.

Thank you. Can't wait to get home in Feb and start using it. Just ordered it online.

I just got the "Nifty Fifty", while it's great for portraits, it's not great for full body shots indoors. I have a fairly large livingroom and I have a real hard time getting more then headshots in my living space with 50mm on a 1.6 crop body. I find myself swithcing back to the kit lens when I want to get the full body shots indoors. (Example: Christmas morning.)
