Default Canon 5D MKI

Bought a Canon 5D MKI today (not a type, it is NOT an MKII). I've played around with a friend's MKI in the past and like it. It actually has a feel very much like my 40D's. The buttons and menus are a bit different but not so much that I couldn't easily figure out the 5D. It is my first full-frame and I didn't want to spend a lot to get into this area. It cost me about $1300 and it came with everything -- original box, strap, manuals, software. It almost looked like it was brand new -- nothing in the box had been touched. Not even the strap had been pulled from its original wrapping. Got it at a local photo shop (a great place to shop and well respected in Northern California). Went out with it on a walkabout in my neighborhood today. Liked the captures. Colors appears right and the exposure meter seemed to be spot on. Hardly had to do anything in ACR let alone Photoshop. This was probably the most worthy shot I got today:

I walked by a house and saw this guy just sitting in the window starring out. I took a few shots and he didn't even flich. He only started barking when I started to walk away. I got a sense of loneliness from from him. I had to shop out some spots in the glass but nothing else. I'm really liking this camera. I won't give up my 40Ds but I'm so glad to finally have a full-frame digital in my arsenal.

Congrats!

If you had enough fun with SLR (assuming), did you get the same feeling back (i.e., knowing what each focal length would do, large viewfinder) with the 5D?

Yeah, I did. I'm an old film guy, and not working with a cropped perspective was really nice. I can't wait (tomorrow) to work with my 17-40mm lens with this body. Today I used the 24-105 lens and I could really see the difference.

Welcome to the full frame world. I would give that 50mm F1.8 a try on your body to see how creamy the background blur is. I have yet to try my 50mm F1.8 on my Mark II.

Yeah, I've thought about that. Love what the 24-105 does with the camera. And I now have superwide with my 17-40. Frankly, I've not been happy with my 50 f1.8 on the 40Ds. So I'll give it a try. What I'd really like to get is the 50 f1.4.

I love the IQ I'm getting with the 5D. On the shot I posted my only regret is that I don't have a decent CP for window scenes like that. And a good 77mm CP will probably cost me a couple of franklins.

17-40 is a very nice lens I bet this is the biggest difference you have noticed so far going full frame.

Pat: You can find them in this price range at Adorama. But I've become convinced that buying used bodies is best done in person and probably at a good photo shop.

I'm lucky in that one of the best photo shops on the West Coast is near my home. I've been popping in fairly regularly looking for just what I found. Often you don't get everything when you buy a used body. In this case I got really lucky getting a fully outfitted used 5D at a great price. AND it has fewer than 10,000 actuations. Couldn't believe that.

The body doesn't even look used -- not a ding or scratch on it. The only thing missing was the protective film over the LCD. LOL.

Yeah, it is a big difference from how this lens acts on the 40D. But I'm also seeing a big difference with my 85 f1.8 as well. I haven't even put the 70-200 f2.8 on it yet.
