Default 500d /Rebel T1 Lenses

I finaly made my decision to buy the REbel t1/500d dslr camera.
I don't know much about dslr's since this is my first one. I wanted to ask for the standard lenses for example 50mm f1.8 lens, since it has no zoom it will not be a very limited lense? i mean you can not do much with it? also the standard lens comes with f3.8-5.6 That means that i can not use this lens in bright sunlight (since i will need an f or around 6.2 or higher) ? I am a bit confused with the lenses and the dslr combination? (did n't had this issues with my g10 brigde camera) i hope the photo quality-outcome will worth the extra money i spend for the Rebel t1

That's a good lens for portraits, and also for low-light photography.

It'll work fine in bright sunlight; Canon would be daft to sell a camera with a standard lens that wouldn't work outside.

That lens can open up to f/3.5 at 18mm focal length and to f/5.6 at 55mm focal length. Basically all SLR/DSLR lenses (including that one) can stop down to at least f/22; many can do f/32 or more. Nobody bothers to talk about how far the lenses can stop down, because it's farther than you'll ever want to use. The f/numbers on SLR/DSLR lenses only tell you the widest that they'll open.

Ummm.. well then..

What I think you asked is "am I going to be limited by the basic lenses that come with the DSLR?" Yes, you will be limited in certain extreme situations (low-light shooting, for example) but the kit lenses are more than capable. Basically what most people will recommend is to shoot with the kit lenses until you actually understand what the lens specifications mean and what affect they have on your pictures, and then you'll be in a better position to decide what lenses you want next.

Not sure where you got this idea... you can use the standard lens in sunlight.

I'd recommend reading this article about max. aperture. It'll make it clearer what the f-numbers on a lens mean in practical terms. It's part of a lens primer that teaches the basics of lenses and what they mean. Yes, there's a very wide array of glass out there for Canon EOS. After a while, it'll stop being so bewildering, and you'll start to enjoy it.

Also, don't worry. The T1i is far more versatile than the G10 in a few ways that you'll enjoy when you get used to them. It'll be frustrating and tougher at first than a simple P&S upgrade would be, since you can now get things out of focus, and you have to learn good handholding technique (don't skip the bit in the manual that tells you how to hold the camera). But just try moving something that's rapidly moving with both cameras, and you'll start to really like your T1i. Put the 50/1.8 on it and shoot with it at f/1.8 or f/2, and you'll start to really love your T1i.

50mm lens f1.8 is a popular and quite affortable lens to buy. My thought though is since it has no zoom its just fixed 50mm from what i can understand right? - i can not zoom in or out, for example if i want to take a photo of a full body person i have to go far away from the person to be able to do that with the 50mm lens? also i can not zoom in to bring the subject closer? i ll have to go closer to the subject?
