Default 50d versus 7d

I'm thinking about upgrading from my Rebel XS to the 50D or the 7D. I had the opportunity to shadow some photographers for 3 wedding this summer.. i would love to to be a second shooter at weddings, take family/kid portraits. Right now i take alot of indoor pics of the family (dark house). I've also been asked to take pictures for friends and family (ie. xmas family pic, kids b-day parties, etc).
I have limited equipment: canon xs, tamron 17-50mm 2.8, 580 ex II flash.... and limited experience (i've only been obsessed with photography for approx 1 yr)
I'd like to get better pictures in low light w/o flash. I'd like better quality pics (better IQ?). I know I have lots of learnin' before i'll be shooting weddings... just trying to make wise purchases.

If I go with the 50D, more budget for lenses... however, I dont want to regret buying the 50D...thinking I'm saving money, only to want to upgrade in a year. The 19- point autofocus on the 7d looked cool... remote flash...but are those good enough reasons to pick the 7d over the 50d?

All i know is, if I ask my hubbie to upgrade cameras in a year.. he wont be a happy camper.

Thx, Carrie
p.s.
I've heard it said "glass" is probably "more" important than camera body.. so that also has me thinking 50mm 1.4

First off I would def recommend the 50mm 1.4. It totally my baby right now. And I think you know the answer. The 7D is bigger and better than the 50D. Without a doubt I would go 7D over the 50D. The 7D is by far the best crop sensor camera that Canon makes. It also looks like you have done your research. Go big.

you might want to wait and see what the 60D is like, because that will probably come out in feb or march of 2010... it'll most likely have a number of the features the 7D has but be at a lower price. just something to consider.

but of those two, if you have the budget for it i would also definitely go for the 7D

Yeah the 60d thing throws me for a loop... gosh.. it's hard enough for me to decide b/w the 50D and 7D. Good point though. Thx!
