to add to this question, and this apply to new lenses too, are there any procedures for testing to obtain a 'sharp copy'? Would we have to bring a laptop to blow up the pictures taken? It's kind of hard to tell on the LCD.

When buying new, there is usually some kind of return policy. Take advantage of it. Test the lens, thoroughly, and compare with other results.
When buying used it really is considerably harder. I've never bought used, but the usual applies: check for scratches on the body of the lens, the glass, etc. Check for dust or fungus inside the lens. Make sure it works perfectly, test it out... if anything doesnt seem right, walk away.

With used, I limit my purchases to KEH, Adorama, or B&H. That way, I know I can return it, and I can trust the grading systems.
Personally, I don't care so much about cosmetic condition, as much as I care about functional condition. That's why trusting the grading systems is key, that you know what the specific grades actually mean. Sharpness testing? Uh--take pictures with it and look at them on your computer? I mean, unless you want to spend your life obsessing over test charts and pixel-peeping vs. what the lens actually gives you in real life. Most testing is about eliminating bad technique or comparison. If you know your technique is good, and you're not comparing to another lens, why bother? Shoot with the lens. If you don't like the results, send it back. Simple as that. With a used lens, it's not like you're going to be able to send it in for under-warranty service. You either budget for a trusted repair person to CLA the lens for you, or you don't.

I guess it is like when you buy anything else, can you trust the seller? Try to get to know the seller and why they are selling. I have purchased almost all my gear used and have never had a problem.
