Default Canon Rebel xTi or PowerShot sx1is

I'm new to all of this, I love photography. I have a 35mm and a coolpix. I want to upgrade but I'm stuck between the Canon Rebel xTi or the Canon PowerShot sx1is. I have a friend who has the PowerShot and she loves it. Is one better than the other?

Depends on what you want to do with it, it is a pretty opened ended question.

From a technical standpoint,

Digital Cameras Side-by-Side, 2 cameras: Digital Photography Review

With the sx1 you're getting IS, a 20x zoom, HD movie mode, and RAW support. Among others
for about $500

The XTi starts around $650 with a 3x kit zoom. With the EOS system, IS is lens based, you don't get any movie modes, but you do get RAW, and the benefits of an SLR with an APS-C sensor.

The SX1 is a nice all in one package, you probably won't be spending any more money aside from a memory card or two with this camera. And you'll be getting pretty decent photos (From what I've seen) In most conditions.

With the XTi, and ultimately dSLRs in general, the spending rarely stops there, there are extra lenses, flashes, and a plethora of goodies to suit your photography needs. To ultimately enable you to take Great photos in a variety of situations.

In the end I believe it all comes down to money and what you want to do with the camera.
Snapshots and keepsake memory photographs? The SX1 should do you fine.

But if you want to explore photography, dabble in the "artsy" stuff, etc, then go with the Rebel.

Just my humble, albeit jumbled opinion.
