Trade entry lenses for 17-55

I've decided on the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM. I plan on selling all the lenses in my signature and add cash to purchase the 17-55. I've read that this particular lens is very prone to IS failure, although the repair is ~$100 (not including shipping). Thoughts?

I even thought about the 24-70 and 24-105 but one has the IS and the other has the bigger aperture. Not to mention I'll need a wide-angle to complement them. And my next planned lens would be the sigma 50 f/1.4. Can't find any reasonably priced/performance 35mm for my crop.
