Any huge differences between the 40D and the 50D...thinking my next camera will prob be one of these two. Mostly do portraits with my p&s...was gonna pair new dslr with 85mm/f 1.8 lense. Sound about right? And which would you prefer the 40 or 50? I also take alot of photos of active kids and low light situations...enviromental portraits.

The biggest difference is that iso 3200 on the 40D is digitally "pushed", while on the 50D it's actually done by gain across the sensor, and has the added "pushed" levels of 6400 and 12800, which the 40D doesn't. Autofocus microadjust and HDMI output are other features the 40D doesn't have, but they probably won't influence you that much if you need to save money with the older model.
The EF 85/1.8 USM is a go-to lens for a lot of portrait shooters, but you want to be sure the focal length works for you. On a crop body camera, like the 40D/50D, it approximates a 135mm lens on a full-frame camera, which is a classic portrait length, but can be too long for use in close spaces or if you wanted to frame more than just a head-and-shoulders shot.

it might be worth it to wait a couple months... the 60D will probably be released in feb. of march... and its possible that it will be a big improvement on the noise issues many people have with the 50D, along with other improvements... and then if you decide you don't want/need/like that one, both the 50D and the 40D will be cheaper
