Hi Mate - Only briefly at CPS, but checked out some images - they're pretty hot. I'd love one as a second body as it happens... (Hows about you get TWO!) - dpreview do a good review, failing that - email me and I'll point you at the Canon press / test shots.

One thing in the DP review doesn't make sense to me:

I thought that the Canon wireless system supported an unlimited number of flashes in each group. My 580EX-II manual doesn't mention any limit, at least. What happened?

What that means is that the 7D body can work as a wireless transmitter to other off-camera flashes...

You can set up your 580EX II (or any of your canon speedlites) 10 feet away and trigger it with the 7D...no need for a pocket wizard! It only works with Canon Speedlites though...no off-brands. I believe the flash limit is 4 groups with 4 flashes in each group.

Hope that clears it up for ya!

Thanks for the explanation, but it doesn't really clear things up. I've been using the Canon wireless system for about two years, so I know it pretty well. There are three groups (A, B and C) and AFAIK there has never been a limit to the number of flashes in each group. I've just checked the manual but it doesn't document any such limitation.

I've never heard of a limit on the number of lights in a group, either, and it doesn't really make sense, given that you are talking about a broadcast light signal. In fact, the EOS flash bible says:

Quote:
There is no coded limit to the number of slave flash units which can be in each group. This is because there is no two-way communication between master and slave units - each slave simply sits there and awaits commands, and the master only knows what slave units exist in terms of whatever light they produce during the prefire stage. So you can set up as many slave units as your space and budget can accommodate. The only issue here is the SE (save energy) feature, which will cause slave units to switch to an energy-saver mode after a certain period of time. (see the SE section for details)

The 7D manual does not have that specification on the number of flashes within a group either.

Thanks for clearing that up! Yet another "downside" of the 7D has been vapourized

No, I'm not a professional.

7D is Canon answer to Nikon D300 not the 5D (I have one too). I also have a Nikon D40 and Canon first DSLR (D30) as well.

In my test, I wished to see how good the 19 cross-type fp and its AF system compare with 1D 45 or D300 15 cross-type 51 fp. How effective its tracking, 8 fps and ISO 3200+ compare with today's norm and in a real shooting situation for me and not other photographers. Don't want to disappoint myself when its claim isn't up to par.

Don't you think it is better than reading specifications, reviews, feeling the camera body and see does one goes gaga with it?

Both D300/D300s and 7D are the best buys in semi-pro bodies. Depending on which camp (Nikon or Canon) you are on.

I stand corrected. Sorry to have led you astray. I searched my 7D manual also and couldn't find a limit...sadly I took that at face value from something I read on the internet. I haven't had a chance to try the transmitter function out yet...I will keep you posted...
