Default What's Wrong with My 40D?

I was photographing an event tonight and the camera just stopped working. When I pushed the shutter, it would focus or take a shot. None of the dials or anything would work either (to change ISO, aperture, or shutter speed.

I had a 17-55 attached to my 40d shooting in AF with a 430EX II flash. Upon further examination, I realized that it was in fact working in MF (manual focus). The same scenario played out with my 50mm 1.8 attached as well.

Does anyone know what this problem can be? The connectors on the mount look good. Should I just take it in to have it looked at? Is there a potential easy fix for this?

Thanks in advance!

Neil

Might be a stupid question: was the camera set to P/S/A/M and not accidentally bumped to something in the Auto range?

No, the dial was in M the whole time.

Any chance that the DoF Preview button is pressed in? Try putting the camera in Auto mode and see if it works.

Are you getting an error message? And have you tried pulling out the battery and waiting a bit before putting it back in? You may also want to try taking off the flash and the lens (use the body cap) and card, and then testing to see if it's the body that's misbehaving, or if it's an interaction with the flash, the lens, or the card.

Thanks all, I've tried all of the above and still nothing.

Sometimes when it is in M, I get the "busy" message but it isn't doing anything.

I did a reset by removing the battery (both the main one and the smaller one), and waiting about 10 minutes before replacing it. It seems to be working again.

You switched to your backup camera, right?

I worked it in MF mode, which for some reason still worked.
