I'm not a pro, I can't spend $1500+ on a lens. I'm wondering if you have any recommendations for a decent enough zoom for under $500.
I know there are some hidden jewel type lenses out there. My Tamron 28-75 is so crisp and clear! Great portrait lens. I know there has to be some equivalent for something in the 200mm zoom range. Ideas?

I have been enjoying my Sigma 70-300 it has kind of a macro setting you can use with 200-300mm ranges. It doesn't have VR or anything but it auto focuses with my D40 and was under 300 bucks. I was told to be sure and get the APO version, so I did.

Here's a link to B&H using these filters: zoom telephotos, canon eos mount, price range $0 - $499.
I second the Sigma 70-300 APO. It can be a touch soft at 300mm but it's not bad. Here are some images I've taken with it. Hope this helps you out.

Thanks! No tripod, either, all were hand held. Now you know why I recommend the Sigma.
